I think its finally done.. This was quite the difficult project, despite it being so simple. I spend the last few hours polishing and fixing some things up (LIKE THOSE STUPID BLACK BORDERS AROUND THE SCREEN) ofc its not perfect, and there still will be issues probably, but I feel like 99% of people won't notice them. Also if your running this game, try and run it in a lower res window, as to not cause lag.

thx and please vote:)

YAAAAAA ITS WORKING FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY!!!!! FAUXOS NOW LETS YOU MODIFY EXISTING COMMANDS AND MAKE NEW ONES

For a while I've been trying to fauxOS modifiable, meaning you can read, edit, and create your own commands. This is a pretty complex undertaking, and has been awfully difficult. Right now I have made it so you are able to read the commands, but writing to them or making new ones wont do anything. Still working on it. I am quite new to JS so this is quite a complex task for me. I also made the scan lines thicker, so the screen curve wouldn't distort them so much. Any feedback is appreciated!

I fixed a lot of the bugs and general issues revolving around the CRT. It was quite the hassle. Also as a result even more things in other parts of the project have been breaking. It's not quite fun, but I think I got most the CRT stuff done. It is quite laggy though, so I might have two HTML files on the website, one with it, and one without.

I FINALLY GOT THE FISHEYE/BARREL FILTER TO WORK. I have been trying on and off at this for quite a while. I thought it was impossible without using WebGL (which I had used in the past, but it caused too much lag). Turns out you can use a simple SVG <filter> with a displacement map, as long as you're careful with how you set the coordinates and scale. It does have a few bugs though. It looks like it has padding around the edges for some reason and its really weird and off putting, anyways, here is how it looks. I used a whole heap of a's for testing.

Update attachment

I added a LOT of stuff. A lot more complex than it seems. I also added support for pasting, which was surprisingly a complex addition (Because of how the terminal works.) I also fixed a whole lot of new bugs I found too. Attached is a demo of pasting!

Update attachment

I fixed a LOT of bugs. The gif attached shows one that actually looks pretty cool. Also when I shipped I forgot to implement the pwd command. Added it to the help command list but never actually coded the logic lmao.

Update attachment

Just started working on this again! Just cloned the repo and working on new stuff. Don't wanna spoil anything yet, but hopefully it will be quite a bit more fleshed out :)

Update attachment

Improved the logo!

I was able to get the domain up!
Find it at www.xk1.xyz

PLEASE VOTE I'M DOWN BAD FOR SHELLS PLEASE

Update attachment

I got the main functionality down. The app takes any URL you throw at it, normalizes and validates it, then spins up a dodgy looking slug by stitching together a top, 2-4 middle, and bottom keyword. It saves that mapping in SQLite via SQLAlchemy and spits back a link that still redirects you to the real site.

Upgraded how the website looks. CSS and HTML. This was actually pretty difficult to be honest. Made the fake ads in photopea :)

Update attachment

I made it generate the URLs! However they don't quite work yet, and it will except any input, even if it isn't a valid domain.

Update attachment

I am going to make a URL shortner, that makes your URLs look very unsafe. Inspired by the old shadyurl, which doesn't exist anymore. I hope you enjoy this Project:)

Anyways I have created the very basic template, It doesn't do anything but it will soon!

A URL shorter that will probably get you put on a watchlist. Use at your own risk.

I made many more 3d models.. Trees, Rocks, Bushes, Etc. Also in the background you can see the next thing I'm working on... It's very ambitious. It will probably take ages. Might not even complete it, but its hurting my head a lot haha.

I fixed a few bugs that only appeared on the webgl/opengl version, and made the game look a little nicer. I rounded out the corners and brought back the blue color scheme, because people told me it looked better. There is still room for improvement, but this was a quick and dirty project, but it still took a lot of effort. (Please don't mind the compression on the GIF lmao)

trying to get it to work with webgl/opengl... for some reason it doesn't want to render transparent things

started 3d modeling an NPC. the meat horse comes next...

Made a simple character controller from scratch. Will make terrain generation next, which will be pretty difficult.

Added more color variety and added animations to make it look smoother. This took a surprising amount of time. I also did a rewrite of like everything haha.

Update attachment

Fixed lots of bugs. . Game should be more playable now:) Check the links if you wanna play. You will have to emulate. I think its ready to be shipped!

Update attachment

I did a pretty big rewrite.. I gave up with the two character width. Though it does look better, it is annoying to program, especially in the restrictive 16-bit real mode. Anyways, I got most the gameplay mechanics down. Overall this project was faster than I expected.

Added more stuff. Better grid (though it still needs working on) numbers and colours. Though I do need to add more variation in the colours as currently they just get more blue haha.

Added the fusing, movement, and spawning. it looks really ugly right now but I'm gonna fix that. They actually do store a value, you just cant see it haha.

Update attachment

Just got the basic camera movement now. I plan for the direction the blocks move in to be based of the direction you are looking. (Also if your reading this you should check my profile heheh)

I made it look better. I did this by basically using two spaces with a foreground colour instead of symbols. Makes it harder to tell that its in VGA text mode. Also turns out my bootloader has some issues with coreboot and you can't see anything. I think I'm getting a bit better at assembly too which is good.

After a few hours I have finally gotten a basic movement system to work. Assembly is tough man. I made each grid square two characters, because every characters height is nearly double it's width. If its not obvious '[]' is the player, and ' .' are the empty cells . This was a lot of work, and I'm glad its finally working. I suppose if I want to step up the Difficulty, I could use VGA graphics mode (where you have to manually program every pixel) instead of VGA text mode (where you have to manually program every character), but I'm not going to do that yet. Switching to VGA graphics mode would probably mean a whole rewrite of my OS. Might do it eventually though...

I was able to get it running off real hardware! This is my first time doing this with a bootloader I made myself. I have made an OS in the past, but I used grub for the bootloader, and used a mix of C and assembly, rather than just pure and painful assembly like I am now.

Update attachment

Before I make SnakeOS, I need to make the bootloader. When your computer powers on, it doesn’t go straight to your operating system, instead it loads the first 512 bytes of the disk and executes it. So I wrote my own 512 byte boot sector that will (eventually) boot into SnakeOS. Right now it prints a message, goes to a new line, Waits for you to press a key, then after you press a key it will print you entered: A Sounds simple and easy right?? Well assembly is a nightmare, and this took me over an hour to make.

Basically the title. It's an OS that only plays snake, made in pure Assembly. This will be hell to make. Please vote.

It's technically the next day since its like 2am right now. I've spent way to much time on this project. Anyways, I think I've got a really good PCB layout, though I cannot figure out how to wire/route it. I am actually so awful at wiring PCBs it's actually not funny. I'll try and get the auto-router to do it, but I don't think it cant figure out the vias. Maybe when the sun is up I'll get my friend (who actually knows what he's doing) to help me out.

Update attachment

My time looks much lower because hacktime wasn't tracking because I use wayland. I SWEAR I SPENT LIKE 6 HOURS ON THIS:
I started with the main johnson. The Teensy 4.0. It's a beast for its size, and good for what I'm doing. I wired in USB D+/D− lines from the connector on the left (J6), passing through a protection diode (D12), V from USB routed to the Teensy’s VIN pin (via J6 as well), and a reset circuit with a 100K pull-up on the reset line (R11) and 2.2 µF cap (C1).

For power distribution and don’t-talk-to-each-other circuitry I used 0.1 µF decoupling caps (C3–C6) near VCC pins and 2.2 µF caps (C1, C2) for big energy social distancing. Also capacitors too.

The keyboard connector (J4, AA01B-S040) takes all the row/col lines straight to GPIOs. I tried to keep it neat. GPIOs 0–31 cover the matrix, plus pull-ups where needed.

TrackPoint was a bit trickier. It uses a 3.3V PS/2-style interface. The Teensy runs at 3.3V logic, and so does the TrackPoint, but I wasn’t 100% sure at first. To be safe, I added four BSS138 MOSFETs (Q1–Q4) with pull-up resistors (R3–R10) to handle level shifting between the TrackPoint clock/data lines and the Teensy. It’s probably overkill, but it doesn’t hurt. There’s also a header (J10) to break out the TrackPoint lines for debugging.

J2 is a soft power switch connected to a GPIO, and R1/R2 (715 Ω) are current-limiting resistors for the indicator LEDs.

Anyways, It's been like 6 hours of research and making this, and I'm ready to hit the sack. I'll work on the PCB tomorrow.

A little backstory:
I’ve always wanted to build one of those cyberdeck-y computers. the ones you see on reddit, crammed into a Pelican case. Problem is, most of the cool ones either skimp on the keyboard or use a generic 60% board. That’s fine for typing… if you’re a minimalist. But I need arrow keys, function keys, a proper Esc key, short enough keys to close the lid, while still being full size, and preferably something that doesn’t require me to lug around a mouse. If only there was a perfect keyboard with all those feats... Well there is! It is on the thinkpad T61. It’s compact, clicky, has a built in TrackPoint (the little red nipple thing you can use for a mouse), and it’s probably the best laptop keyboard ever made. One problem. It doesnt use USB. It uses some arcane ribbon cable protocol only Lenovo/IBM’s old motherboards understand.

Trying to add menus and lobbies... It's not nice. Fishnet has some super specific things that are causing me trouble.

Update attachment

I tried to add the fish-eye effect to my terminal, to no avail. It's impossible to do via CSS, and I'm not sure about JS. I tried with webGL but it's so painful and I'd rather not. It doesn't NEED a fisheye filter, and still looks good, anyways, what I actually did add, was a command and filesystem. You can now use commands like ls, cd, mkdir, cp, etc.

I made a little init screen thing for it. It wasn't too complex, but I am still sorta new to JS. I discovered that it is literally impossible to a CRT fisheye effect in css, so it looks pretty plain. (What i had before was just a angle thing. it wouldn't actually curve back in) So now I am going to have to do webgl stuff to get the fisheye to work.. not looking forward to it.

I went crazy with the CSS. (I mean it is just glow, scanlines, fisheye, viginette, all of which you can find online.) Though I did mess something up, and it always wants to scroll, down and out. Probably just gonna set overflow to hidden, though it might be a little uncentered. Also you cant see it in the screenshot but the cursor block blinks :)

It still doesn't do anything yet, but now that I got the looks down, I'll start working on that.

Update attachment

I added some very simple HTML, and even more simple CSS. all I did was add some text, and made the background black and green. Literally just:

body {
background-color: black;
color: limegreen;
font-family: monospace;
}

It already looks like an actual terminal. It has ZERO functionality, but the graphics are nearly there. I'm not looking forward to the JS stuff.

fauxCRT

A web-based terminal that acts as some old DOS or UNIX OS. Users can run commands, create and edit files, and maybe even run visual programs (If I get around to making that). UI made to resemble a CRT monitor from the 80s. I hope you consider voting! :)

Added a lot of stuff. rewrote my entire gun system. added damage, ammo and reloading. This took a lot of time. I also added some other stuff, like spread and recoil. That was a little easier, as I basically copied the code from an older project. In the video there is no sound, but I can assure you there are gunshots and reloading noises. Also Ignore how the recoil is so high, for some reason lower res has more recoil, which I am probably going to fix next.

Made this famas model for my game. I would like to add arms to the player instead of having a floating gun, but that's too much work (for right now at least). I'd have to make all the animations, and figure out how to model hands, and all that stuff.

Update attachment

Got bullets working & synced between clients. I just need to make them do damage and they should be good!

Got basic multiplayer working. I've done this so many times so its not really too difficult anymore.
